The Northeast is home to great hiking spots for all skill levels. But if you’ve never hiked before, hitting the trails might feel a bit intimidating. Here are some tips on how to prepare, dress and pack for your first hike.
Before Your Hike: Check the weather forecast, eat a healthy meal, let someone know where you are hiking.
Hiking Supplies: Proper footwear is the most important item for a hike. Water bottle is essential. Bug repellant will protect you from mosquito-borne illnesses. First Aid Kit in case you are hurt or are bitten. Spare clothes in case the weather changes. Sun protection to protect yourself from the dangers of sun exposure. Navigation tools like a map and compass. Backpack with comfortable straps, plenty of pockets and a loop/key ring.
